Fact

Police sources told El Pueblo of about 1,500 applications and about 800 refusals

On 30 October El Pueblo de Ceuta wrote, citing police sources, that about 1,500 asylum applications by Moroccan citizens had been processed and that about 800 had received an unfavourable decision. On 31 October El Español repeated those figures, citing El Pueblo. They are not the figure of 704 unfavourable decisions that Europa Press attributed on 27 October. They are not merged.

  • El Pueblo de Ceuta, police sources: “approximately 1,500 asylum applications by citizens of Moroccan nationality, of which about 800 have received an unfavourable decision”, and the rest would still be pending. That is those sources’ figure in that outlet.
  • The same sources, according to El Pueblo: “the refusal of an asylum application does not mean that the foreign national is expelled immediately.” The expulsions they say are being carried out correspond, according to them, to judicial decisions linked to crimes. They are not equated with the about 800 refusals.
  • Those sources tell El Pueblo that citizens of Sudan are not being returned and that returns of citizens of Yemen are halted by order of the National Court. That is what the outlet attributes to those sources, not the text of a court order.
  • El Español, 31 October, repeats the same approximations, citing El Pueblo de Ceuta. It is not a second count. The 704 unfavourable decisions of 27 October stay on their entry and are not averaged with these about 800.
